Dear Diane,

How do I deal with my daughter Mia talking to people who aren’t there? She is five and I worry that something is wrong with her. One friend that she says she has is Elena, and what is weird is that I had an Aunt Elena who passed away. Is she being controlled by spirits? Should I think about getting help for her?

It is fairly common for children under the age of six or so to see imaginary friends, and yes, children have a greater gift for seeing spirits.

Eventually all of us begin building a mind filled with facts, rules and memorization, but while we are young, we have fewer things to distract us from the world of energy. Most children begin to lose this connection by the time they are of school age, but a gifted few will maintain the connection.

One thing that you can do for Mia now is ask her about her spirit friends. It is important to make sure that anyone she relates to, living or not, treats her with respect and courtesy. It is a great time to teach her that if they are not nice, they need to go away.

As for Elena, I do feel that your Aunt watches out for Mia. Encourage Mia to share what she can about messages from Elena and others. You may be pleasantly surprised at what you discover. Don’t be overly concerned, but enjoy the beauty of this connection. In most cases, it simply fades away. Good Luck – Diane
